FAIRFAX CHARITY SEEKS DONATIONS FOR “BACK TO SCHOOL” PROGRAM

New Partnership to Help Needy Children in Central Fairfax

FAIRFAX, VA (July 5, 2011) – Fairfax-based charity Our Daily Bread (ODB) is seeking donations from the community to provide school supplies to needy children who attend school in the Fairfax County area as part of its Back to School Program.

This year ODB is collaborating with the Fairfax County Public Schools and other area non-profit agencies to purchase high quality school supplies at a deeply discounted rate through a new partnership with local non-profit Kids R First.

The program will allow ODB to provide all the supplies a student needs for approximately $15 per high school student and less for younger students, where it can traditionally cost about $40 per child. The supplies will go to 350 qualified needy children who attend schools in the Fairfax High School pyramid. In future years, ODB hopes to expand the program to assist children in other Fairfax County Public Schools that are not yet being served.

Our Daily Bread’s Executive Director Lisa Whetzel said, “Our Daily Bread is excited to partner with Kids R First and work with Fairfax County Public Schools and other local non-profits to better utilize community resources to ensure that we help as many children as possible. For many families in our area who are working hard but struggling to make ends meet, the prospect of finding the funds to purchase new supplies for their children each year can be stressful. We hope the community will respond generously to ensure that children whose families are in crisis are able to return to school this fall with the tools they need to succeed in the new school year.”

In addition to financial contributions to purchase the supplies, ODB is seeking donations of new teen-sized backpacks and scientific calculators. ODB will accept donations from July 1 through August 12 at its offices or at local businesses who are partnering with ODB to provide drop boxes. Needed items and drop-off sites are listed below. For more information, contact Jennifer Rose at 703-273-8829 or holiday@ODBFairfax.org or visit www.ODBFairfax.org.

Our Daily Bread is a volunteer-based organization focused on easing the plight of low-income residents in the Fairfax County area of Virginia.
